XR x AI: technology as a tool, story as a compass

During the eighth meeting of XR Creators Connect, this time with the theme AI x XR, it was once again evident how quickly the playing field is developing. In the innovative ecosystem of the B'GAME Incubator in Breda, creators, technicians, and thinkers came together to explore the latest applications of AI within XR.

On behalf of CIIIC, we were present to join this movement, share our own developments, and above all to listen. Because while the deep dives largely focused on technical innovations, our focus is precisely on the question: what do these developments mean for the way we create and experience stories?

From technology to experience

What stood out during the presentations is that AI increasingly plays a role in creating interaction-driven experiences. Think of virtual humans with whom you can engage in conversation, as applied in museum installations or educational settings. Or training environments where behavior, communication, and decision-making are central. Here, XR shifts from a visual medium to a relational medium. As AI researcher Fei-Fei Li aptly states: “AI is not just about automation, it’s about augmenting human capabilities.” In XR, this means: not just watching, but participating. Not just experiencing, but influencing.

Storytelling in a dynamic landscape

For CIIIC, the core is not in the technology itself, but in how that technology enhances the story. AI makes it possible to make stories:

  • more personal (adaptive to user behavior and input);
  • more layered (with multiple perspectives or outcomes);
  • more accessible (for example, via voice-controlled interaction).

At the same time, this brings new complexity. AI systems are dynamic, continuously changing, and not always reproducible. This imposes new requirements on creators: how do you ensure narrative consistency in a world that is constantly changing? Media scholar Janet H. Murray previously described this as: “The challenge of digital storytelling is not to tell a story, but to design a world in which many stories can happen.” AI accelerates this development exponentially.

Creation accelerated, but not replaced

Another important insight from the sessions is the enormous acceleration in production processes. Where creating a 3D model used to take days or weeks, it can now be done in minutes. Generative AI tools make it possible to prototype, iterate, and experiment faster.

Nevertheless, the conclusion is clear: AI does not replace the creator, but changes their role. As stated in the sessions: “The future is not AI or artist, but a combination.” Or, in the words of entrepreneur and investor Andrew Ng: “AI is the new electricity.” It is an infrastructure. An accelerator. But not a replacement for creativity.

Opportunities and tensions

The combination of XR and AI opens up a playing field full of possibilities:

  • Deepening immersion through real-time interaction and responsive environments;
  • Learning and training in safe, realistic scenarios;
  • New forms of participation where users become co-creators.

At the same time, there are clear challenges:

  • ethical questions around data and transparency;
  • dependency on rapidly changing technologies;
  • the balance between automation and authenticity.

Or as futurist Kevin Kelly states: “We tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run.” The question of whether AI is an opportunity or a threat to XR was often implicitly raised during the meeting but rarely explicitly answered. Perhaps that is not the right question.

The more relevant question is: how do we consciously deploy this technology to serve meaningful experiences?

For CIIIC, there is a clear role. At the intersection of immersive technology and content development, we continue to seek ways in which technology is not leading, but supportive of the story.

Building further together

We look back with great pleasure on an inspiring XRCC meeting and are glad to be part of this network as CIIIC. The technical depth that takes place there forms a valuable foundation for the substantive and creative challenges we focus on.

We are eager to continue this dialogue during our annual event on April 16, where we will further explore the role of storytelling within immersive experiences.

Because ultimately: technology makes a lot possible, but it is the stories that remain. Would you like to talk further about the role of AI within XR and storytelling? Join our annual event or contact CIIIC.
