Public values and immersive experiences
Immersive experiences (IX) is an umbrella term for digital technologies that, in combination with physical elements, create engaging and immersive user experiences. Because IX enables deeper and richer experiences, its intended effects can be significant and far-reaching.
Immersive experiences offer opportunities for innovation, learning, work, and societal impact. At the same time, the use of IX raises important questions about its influence on public values such as safety, inclusion, accessibility, privacy, sustainability, and autonomy.
Through CIIIC PRO, Regieorgaan SIA supports research that provides insight into the effects of IX on these public and societal values. The scheme funds the development of knowledge, methods, and tools that help organisations design, implement, and scale immersive experiences responsibly.
Aim of the funding scheme
The programme aims to develop validated knowledge and methods that:
- provide insight into the effects of immersive experiences on public and societal values;
- contribute to the assessment of the risks and opportunities associated with IX applications;
- support public and private organisations in the responsible deployment and adoption of immersive experiences.
Research themes
The funding scheme focuses on themes including autonomy, safety, inclusion, accessibility, privacy, and sustainability, including climate impact and energy consumption. Cross-cutting aspects such as the integration of AI into IX applications and the relationship between public values and future earning potential are relevant across all themes.
Projects may address a combination of these themes. Proposals on other topics are also welcome, provided they contribute to strengthening public values and enhancing the practical application of immersive experiences.

You can already begin to:
- identify or bring together consortium partners;
- formulate and refine research questions related to public values and immersive experiences;
- familiarise yourself with the CIIIC Public Values Framework;
- stay informed through updates from Regieorgaan SIA and CIIIC, including their newsletters.
