Revised guideline and Self-assessment Public Values in Immersive Experiences

News

Within the CIIIC program, there is a strong focus on public values. The rise of immersive technologies allows us to create new types of experiences, but the rapid emergence of these systems also presents challenges. While we are now familiar with the risks of, for example, social media and AI to democracy, privacy, our health, or the climate, awareness of these issues in relation to IX could still grow. As a program that aims to stimulate IX in the Netherlands, CIIIC continues to ensure that attention to public values is an integral part of our programs.

Fortunately, we have excellent help with this: we are incredibly pleased with the hard work that Rathenau Institute, PublicSpaces, and Waag Futurelab have done to write a new version of the Guideline and Self-Assessment Public Values. You can find the document (and a legal explanatory document) on our Public Values page.

However solid the document may be, we will continue to work on it (with our partners) — and moreover, do more to anchor public values in the CIIIC programs. We are aware that we are focusing on a broad 'field' with organizations and professionals of various backgrounds, so a one size fits all approach is not possible. Additionally, the IX field is still young and rapidly developing, and for that reason alone, the guideline will need to be further developed. Finally, additional tools that may be needed to help parties create immersive experiences that align with the public values as previously formulated by the Rathenau Institute.

In line with the slogan 'eat your own dogfood', CIIIC will soon provide further explanation on how we ourselves are working towards a practice that is as public-values-friendly as possible. To give you a preview: the source code of the public values guideline itself is published on Github, if only because we like to write in the open standard for markup text Markdown (and use open source tools like Pandoc and Weasyprint to create HTML and PDFs, for example), and in this way, we can also easily manage versions.
